The Personal Message Vital

How to use the Personal Message vital to write heartfelt letters to your loved ones - writing tips, rich text formatting, and sample letters for inspiration.

The Personal Message vital is where you write letters to your loved ones. While most vitals capture structured information like account numbers or legal details, the Personal Message vital is your space to speak from the heart.

Every plan includes the Personal Message vital. It's available under the Personal category in the vitals catalog.

What Makes It Different

Most vitals have structured fields - bank name, policy number, account type. The Personal Message vital is open-ended. It gives you a rich text editor to write freely, in your own voice, about whatever matters most.

Use it for:

  • Love letters - Tell someone what they mean to you
  • Life advice - Share wisdom you've gathered over the years
  • Practical guidance - Explain where things are, how to handle matters
  • Apologies or forgiveness - Say things that are hard to say in person
  • Celebrations - Write letters for future milestones (graduations, weddings, birthdays)

Creating a Personal Message

  1. Go to your Dashboard or Assets page
  2. Create a new vital and select the Personal category
  3. Choose Personal Message as the vital type
  4. Write your letter using the rich text editor
  5. Assign one or more recipients
  6. Optionally attach files - photos, documents, or other keepsakes

You can create multiple Personal Message vitals, each addressed to different people or covering different topics.

Writing Tips

Be Authentic

Write in your own voice. Your recipient will treasure hearing you in your words, not formal or stilted language. If you'd say "hey kiddo" in real life, say it in your letter.

Share Specifics

Mention specific memories, inside jokes, or shared experiences. These personal touches make your message unmistakably yours and are what your recipients will treasure most.

Consider Structure

For longer letters, organizing your thoughts can help:

  • Opening - Set the tone, express your love
  • Memories - Share favorite moments together
  • Wisdom - Any advice or life lessons
  • Wishes - Your hopes for their future
  • Closing - Final words of love

Don't Overthink It

There's no "perfect" letter. What matters is that it comes from the heart.

Many people write a first draft and come back to refine it over time. Your vital saves automatically, so you can add thoughts whenever inspiration strikes.

Rich Text Formatting

The editor supports:

  • Bold and italic text
  • Bullet points and numbered lists
  • Headings for organization
  • Horizontal dividers

Use formatting sparingly to enhance readability without distraction.

Attaching Files

Make your letter even more meaningful by attaching files:

  • Photos - A favorite picture of the two of you
  • Documents - A scanned handwritten note or letter
  • Audio or video - A recorded message (Safe and Vault plans)

Files are delivered alongside your letter when the time comes.
