If you store important passwords in 1Password, you can export them to include in your One Final Message. This ensures your recipients have access to critical accounts when your message is delivered.
What You'll Need
To export your passwords from 1Password, you'll need:
- The 1Password desktop app or access to 1Password.com
- Your account password or Secret Key
- A secure location to temporarily store the exported file
Exported files contain your passwords in an unencrypted format. Handle them with extreme care and delete them immediately after importing.
Exporting from 1Password Desktop
- Open the 1Password app on your Mac or Windows computer
- Select the vault you want to export (or All Vaults)
- Click on an item in the vault to ensure the vault is active
- From the menu bar, select File → Export
- Choose your export format (CSV recommended)
- Select a save location
- Enter your account password when prompted
- Click Export Data
You can export individual vaults or all vaults at once. If you have multiple vaults, consider which passwords are most critical for your recipients.
Exporting from 1Password Web
- Sign in to your account at 1Password.com
- Click on your profile icon in the upper right
- Select Export Data from the menu
- Choose the vault you want to export
- Select CSV as the format
- Click Export
- Enter your account password to confirm
- Download the file
Understanding Export Formats
1Password offers several export formats:
- CSV - Best for importing into One Final Message; includes usernames, passwords, URLs, and notes
- 1PIF - 1Password's proprietary format (not recommended for this purpose)
We recommend using CSV format for maximum compatibility.
What's Included in the Export
Your CSV export will typically contain:
- Title - The name of each item
- URL - Website addresses
- Username - Login usernames or emails
- Password - Passwords in plain text
- Notes - Any notes you've added
- Tags - Categories or tags you've applied
Different item types (logins, secure notes, credit cards) may export with slightly different column structures.
Security Best Practices
1Password exports are completely unencrypted. The CSV file contains all your passwords in plain text that anyone can read.
To protect your data during this process:
- Work quickly - Export and import in one session
- Use a secure computer - Only export on a trusted, malware-free device
- Avoid cloud sync - Don't save the export to Dropbox, Google Drive, or other cloud services
- Delete immediately - Securely delete the file after importing
- Empty trash - Use secure delete if available, and empty your trash or recycle bin
- Don't email it - Never send the export file via email
Preparing Your Export for Recipients
Consider organizing your passwords before exporting:
- Create a dedicated vault - Move only essential passwords to a separate vault for export
- Add context in notes - Include helpful information about each account
- Remove unnecessary items - Don't include passwords your recipients won't need
- Update passwords - Ensure all passwords are current before exporting
Next Steps
After exporting your passwords:
- Navigate to your Message in One Final Message
- Click Add Attachment
- Upload the CSV file
- Immediately delete the export file from your computer
- Empty your trash or recycle bin
Once uploaded to One Final Message, your passwords are encrypted and secure. They'll only become accessible to your recipients when your message is delivered.
Troubleshooting
Can't Find Export Option
The export feature is only available in the desktop app and web interface. The mobile apps don't support exporting data.
Export Shows "No Items"
Make sure you've selected a vault that contains items, and that you have the necessary permissions to export from that vault.
File Won't Import
Check that you exported as CSV format. The 1PIF format is not compatible with most import tools.
Missing Items in Export
Some item types may not export well to CSV format. Verify your export includes all critical items by opening the CSV file in a text editor or spreadsheet app before deleting the original.
Family or Team Account Limitations
If you're using a Family or Team account, you may only be able to export vaults you have permission to access. Check with your account administrator if certain vaults are missing.
